Authorities in Morobo County of Central Equatoria State are taking a stand against deforestation, particularly in areas dominated by the SPLAM-IO. County Commissioner Charles Data launched a campaign on September 4 in response to the excessive logging, timber harvesting, and charcoal burning in Panyume Payam for sale in Uganda. Concerned local residents petitioned for action in mid-August, prompting the initiative.
Executive Director Bosco Daniel Wani highlighted that most of the illegal activities were carried out by individuals operating in the SPLM-IO dominated Panyume, claiming independence and lack of government support for their actions. The Border Customs Manager in Koboko District, Uganda, stressed the importance of proper documentation for the transportation of goods and urged caution in handling the situation to avoid diplomatic issues between the two countries.
Despite previous unsuccessful conservation attempts, Commissioner Data has escalated the matter to the State Governor’s office. The region has faced unrest, with reports of arrests made by suspected SPLM-IO members for objecting to deforestation. Efforts to contact SPLM-IO officials in Panyume for input have been fruitless.
