Kenya’s high court has temporarily blocked the proposed 30-year lease of Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) to India’s Adani Group in exchange for upgrading the airport. The Law Society of Kenya (LSK) and the Kenya Human Rights Commission (KHRC) raised concerns about affordability, job losses, fiscal risks, and lack of value for taxpayers in the deal.
Following a joint application, the high court granted a request for a judicial review to challenge the potential lease agreement. LSK’s President Faith Odhiambo confirmed the court’s decision to issue a stay on implementing the Adani proposal over JKIA until the case is concluded.
Last month, Kenya’s aviation union threatened a strike over the deal, citing potential job losses and non-Kenyan workers. The government acknowledges the need to upgrade the airport but has not finalized a decision on the proposed public-private partnership with Adani. Safeguards to protect national interests are under consideration.
