Indian television channel NDTV reported that India’s National Security Adviser Ajit Doval is set to meet with President Vladimir Putin in Moscow to discuss resolving the war in Ukraine. This follows Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s recent visits to Moscow and Kyiv. Modi met with Putin in July and then with President Volodymyr Zelensky in August, the first Indian leader to visit Ukraine since its independence. On his return, Modi updated Putin on the visit and stressed India’s commitment to finding a peaceful resolution to the conflict.
During the Eastern Economic Forum, Putin mentioned being in touch with India, China, and Brazil, expressing respect for partners seeking to resolve the conflict. Analysts speculate on India’s potential role in brokering peace between Russia and Ukraine, with expert Daniel Markey suggesting India’s geopolitical ambitions play a role.
Ajit Doval, a trusted aide of Prime Minister Modi and former intelligence director, will lead discussions in Moscow. Known for his strong stance on regional security, Doval’s involvement signifies India’s commitment to global diplomacy. As India navigates complex international relations, Doval’s role in the peace talks reflects the country’s ambition to be a prominent global player.
