Germany has implemented border controls with its nine neighbouring countries to prevent irregular migration, emphasizing that it is compliant with EU regulations. Interior Minister Nancy Faeser reassured that Germany’s actions are not meant to undermine the EU. Berlin extended temporary controls to its borders with all EU neighbours for six months, including France, Luxembourg, Belgium, the Netherlands, and Denmark.
Despite backlash from Poland, Germany maintains that it is following national and EU law and emphasizes coordinated action within the EU. The move comes amid public outcry over irregular migrant entry following suspected terrorist attacks. Chancellor Olaf Scholz’s government has been pressured to address the issue, with the CDU opposition party calling for stricter measures, including declaring a national “emergency”.
To manage asylum seekers, Germany proposed detaining those already registered in other EU countries and expediting their deportation. Utilizing the Eurodac database, German police would identify and detain such individuals to prevent them from evading authorities.
As political tensions rise, Germany faces challenges in managing irregular migration and addressing security concerns.
