The Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) has reaffirmed its support for the Arab Ministerial Liaison Committee’s efforts on the Syrian crisis and emphasized adherence to the Amman meeting provisions from May 2023. During the recent meeting, with Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov in attendance, the Council rejected regional interference in Syria’s internal affairs and backed the UN’s political solution efforts in line with Resolution 2254.
The Council also stressed the importance of the Constitutional Committee’s resumption, maintaining Syria’s territorial integrity, independence, and sovereignty. The Arab Liaison Committee established in May 2023 consists of foreign ministers from Syria, Jordan, Saudi Arabia, Iraq, Lebanon, and Egypt. Its first meeting focused on enhancing border security, combating drug production, and facilitating the return of refugees.
The committee aims to improve public services in return areas and collaborate with the international community for early recovery projects. The Constitutional Committee, crucial for negotiating constitutional reforms in Syria, faces challenges following disruptions in 2022 due to geopolitical tensions.
