Ex-Brazil president Bolsonaro awarded damages for stolen bed allegations.

Ex-Brazil president Bolsonaro awarded damages for stolen bed allegations.

Former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro has been awarded $2,600 in damages from the state after being accused of taking furniture from the presidential residence. His successor, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, claimed Bolsonaro had removed over 260 objects, including “the bed,” from the Alvorada Palace. However, Bolsonaro and his wife clarified that they had only stored publicly-owned furniture during their term to redecorate to their taste.

In addition to the damages, a federal judge ordered a retraction to be published by the presidency, as per the judgment seen by AFP news agency. Despite this victory, Bolsonaro still faces legal challenges, including allegations of inciting rioters who stormed government buildings following his electoral defeat in 2022. While he expressed regret for the unrest, he denies responsibility. The Brazilian Supreme Court has also included him in the investigation into the storming of government buildings.

Although facing legal scrutiny, Bolsonaro remains a prominent figure in Brazilian politics, leading the right-wing faction in the country.
