Curfew Imposed in Indian State After Ethnic Clashes – Media Reports

Manipur has been grappling with ongoing conflicts between the Meitei Hindu community and the Kuki Christian community, leading to ethnic enclaves within the state. The recent resurgence of hostilities resulted in the tragic deaths of 11 individuals last week, sparking violence and necessitating a curfew in the state capital, Imphal.

Student-led protests escalated into clashes with police, with protestors reportedly arming themselves and firing at law enforcement officials. This prompted the imposition of a strict curfew until further notice.

The unrest stemmed from long-standing tensions over land and job opportunities between the two communities. Activists have criticized local leaders for stoking ethnic divisions for political gains within Manipur, ruled by Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Bharatiya Janata Party.

This recent escalation of violence, including the use of unconventional weapons and drone attacks, underscores the urgent need for authorities to address and resolve underlying issues to prevent further bloodshed and safeguard the welfare of all residents in Manipur.
