China, U.S. convene to boost climate action in Beijing

China and the United States recently collaborated in the second meeting of the Working Group on Enhancing Climate Action in the 2020s, held in Beijing from September 4 to 6. Co-chaired by China’s Special Envoy for Climate Change Liu Zhenmin and U.S. Senior Advisor for International Climate Policy John Podesta, the discussions mainly focused on the implementation of their respective 2030 nationally determined contributions (NDCs) and preparations for the 2035 NDCs.

Both nations welcomed the productive exchanges under the working group, covering topics like energy transition, methane reduction, circular economy, and sustainable cities. They also expressed their commitment to host a Methane and Other Non-CO2 Greenhouse Gases Summit at COP29, supporting Azerbaijan’s presidency.

With the backdrop of COP29, the 29th Conference of the Parties of the UNFCCC to be held in Azerbaijan in November 2024, China and the U.S. emphasized the importance of further dialogue and collaboration to enhance global climate actions. This meeting signifies a significant step towards a more sustainable and greener future.
