Australian travellers will soon need to apply for permission to enter the UK under changes to its border security system.
The UK government is digitising its border security and implementing the Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) scheme. This program will require all visitors from non-European countries, including Australia, to seek permission before traveling.
Australian visitors can apply for an ETA from November 27, with the requirement taking effect on January 8, 2025. The ETA costs A$20 and allows multiple journeys to the UK for up to six months at a time over two years or until passport expiry.
The UK’s Ministry for Migration and Citizenship expressed that the ETA expansion demonstrates their commitment to enhancing security through innovation and modernizing the immigration system to provide a seamless experience for travelers.
