In a recent statement, Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan refuted Azerbaijani claims that the Armenian Constitution contains territorial demands against Azerbaijan. The dispute stems from a reference in the constitution’s preamble to the Armenian Declaration of Independence, which acknowledges the 1989 decision for the unification of the Armenian SSR and Nagorno-Karabakh.
Pashinyan clarified that the Constitution does not advocate any territorial claims against Azerbaijan, contrasting it with Azerbaijan’s constitution, which historically lays claim to parts of Armenia. He emphasized that the legal framework ensures compliance with international treaties, hinting at the future application of a peace treaty between Armenia and Azerbaijan.
The PM concluded that Armenia refrains from escalating the issue of territorial claims in order to prioritize the peace process and adhere to the terms of the prospective peace treaty.
