Armenia Parliament Speaker: Nagorno-Karabakh ‘Does Not Exist’
The Speaker of Armenia’s Parliament, Alen Simonyan, stated that Nagorno-Karabakh “does not exist” as a legal entity. This comment came after opposition members questioned his actions regarding joint sessions with Karabakh lawmakers.
Simonyan emphasized that Nagorno-Karabakh officials no longer hold any status in Armenia following a decree to dissolve all state institutions in the region, which was signed after Azerbaijan regained control of the territory.
Relations between Azerbaijan and Armenia have been strained since 1991 when Armenia occupied Nagorno-Karabakh. In 2020, Azerbaijan liberated several areas from Armenian occupation during a 44-day conflict.
The “Nagorno-Karabakh Republic” declared in 1991 was not recognized by any UN member state. The conflict ended with a ceasefire brokered by Russia.
