President and Prime Minister of Pakistan convened separate meetings on Monday to discuss strategies for garnering a two-thirds majority for a proposed constitutional amendment. The main focus of the legislation is to establish a fixed three-year term for the Chief Justice of Pakistan. Despite President Asif Ali Zardari extending an invite, JUI-F leader Maulana Fazlur Rehman skipped the meeting at the Presidency.
The ruling coalition, which currently falls short of the required votes, is looking to secure additional support to ensure the bill’s passage in the National Assembly. Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif emphasized the importance of increased political stability and continued economic progress during the meetings.
In a separate meeting held at the PM’s Office, Shehbaz Sharif highlighted the government’s efforts in stabilizing the economy and reducing inflation rates. The leaders discussed various legislative bills, including one aimed at expanding the number of Supreme Court judges from 17 to 21. The government is working towards enhancing political stability in order to drive the country towards further development and growth.
