The redevelopment plan for the area around Meiji Jingu shrine in Tokyo is undergoing a review after protests over tree removal, the main developer announced. Mitsui Fudosan Co has submitted a revised plan to the Tokyo metropolitan government following opposition from figures like Ryuichi Sakamoto, emphasizing the need to preserve the urban forest and Jingu Gaien Ginkgo Avenue.
The International Council on Monuments and Sites, a UNESCO advisory body, has called for the plan’s withdrawal, issuing a “Heritage Alert” to protect cultural heritage. The updated plan aims to save over 120 mature trees and increase the distance from a new complex to the ginkgo avenue to prevent damage to tree roots.
The project, which includes high-rise buildings and sports facility relocations, initially faced completion by 2036. Mitsui Fudosan will assess the impact of the review on the schedule. The developer plans to engage with residents and provide project updates to ensure transparency and community involvement.
Ryuichi Sakamoto, in a heartfelt plea before his passing, highlighted the importance of preserving the historic trees and legacy of Jingu amidst urban development.
