In a bold move, Somalia has issued an ultimatum to companies operating within its borders. By September 1, 2024, all firms must revise their information to reflect Somaliland as part of Somalia, not an independent entity. This directive from the Ministry of Commerce and Industry targets money transfer agencies like Paysii, Dahabshil, and Jubba Express, as well as airlines like Ethiopian Airlines for referring to Somaliland as a separate destination.
The crackdown follows a controversial memorandum of understanding between Ethiopia and Somaliland, potentially granting Ethiopia coastal access in exchange for recognizing Somaliland’s independence. Mogadishu vehemently opposes this deal, sparking a diplomatic standoff. Despite the lack of official recognition for Somaliland, the region continues to form strategic partnerships, now risking these relationships.
As the conflict unfolds, balancing territorial claims, economic interests, and regional stability in the Horn of Africa becomes apparent. With major airlines complying with Somalia’s demands, the international community closely watches the situation’s outcome, shaping future diplomatic and economic relations in this volatile region.
