Venezuelan opposition leader Edmundo Gonzalez Urrutia has embarked on his journey into exile in Spain with the help of the South American government providing him safe passage. Gonzalez Urrutia, who challenged President Nicolas Maduro’s recent re-election, had been in hiding for a month and had refused to appear before prosecutors, fearing for his freedom.
Seeking refuge at the Spanish Embassy in Caracas, Gonzalez Urrutia requested political asylum from the Spanish government. Venezuela’s vice president Delcy Rodriguez announced on social media that Caracas had granted him safe passage out of the country.
