‘Ukraine uses ‘dragon drones’ against Russia’ – CNN

Ukraine has unveiled a new tactic in its conflict with Russian forces by deploying UAVs that drop thermite, a molten metal incendiary, on enemy positions. Referred to as “dragon drones” due to the fire-like appearance of the molten metal, these innovative weapons are a modern twist on historic technology originally developed in Germany during World War II.

Thermite, a mixture of aluminum powder and iron oxide, burns at temperatures reaching 2,200 degrees Celsius, making it a highly destructive tool capable of penetrating metal and vegetation cover. While not banned under international law, the use of incendiary weapons like thermite has raised concerns about civilian casualties and environmental damage.

Former Russian President Dmitry Medvedev acknowledged Ukraine’s advancement in military technology, particularly in UAV capabilities, during the conflict. Despite the psychological impact of the “dragon drones,” experts believe their use is limited and serve as a niche rather than a mainstream weapon in Kiev’s arsenal.

The convergence of modern drone technology with historic incendiary tactics showcases the ongoing evolution of warfare in the 21st century.
