Sudan Rejects UN Call for Independent Force to Protect Civilians

In response to a call by UN experts for the deployment of an “independent and impartial force” to safeguard civilians affected by the ongoing conflict in Sudan, the Sudanese government has rejected the recommendation. The conflict, which has been ongoing since April last year, has resulted in tens of thousands of casualties and one of the world’s worst humanitarian crises.

The independent UN experts uncovered “harrowing” violations by both sides, possibly constituting war crimes and crimes against humanity. Despite the alarming findings, Sudan’s foreign ministry dismissed the recommendations as a violation of their mandate, labeling the UN Human Rights Council as a “political and illegal body”.

The conflict has led to the displacement of eight million civilians and severe food shortages for over 25 million people in Sudan. The government emphasizes the protection of civilians as a top priority but opposes the deployment of an external force.

As tensions escalate, the rejection of an arms embargo adds to the challenges faced in resolving the crisis in Sudan.
