SA premier Peter Malinauskas has revealed the state’s plan, inspired by Florida’s ban on children under 14 using platforms like Facebook and Instagram.
The proposal also includes requiring parental consent for South Australian children aged 14 and 15 to join social media.
Former federal court judge Robert French has outlined plans for enforcing the ban, including the appointment of a regulator to oversee compliance and issue fines for violations.
If approved, this legislation would be the first of its kind in Australia, aiming to address the concerning impact of social media on children’s mental health as highlighted by experts.
Sonya Ryan OAM, founder of the Carly Ryan Foundation, supports the proposal, emphasizing the need for stricter laws to protect children from harmful online content and regulate big tech companies.
