The Philippines made a significant arrest on Sunday, capturing a pastor wanted in the US for child sex trafficking, following a two-week manhunt for the self-proclaimed “Appointed Son of God”. Apollo Quiboloy, known for his ties to former Philippine president Rodrigo Duterte, leads the Kingdom of Jesus Christ (KOJC) church with millions of followers.
Charged by the US Department of Justice for sex trafficking, Quiboloy was taken into custody at his church’s compound in Davao along with four sect members. They will face trial for child abuse, sexual abuse, and human trafficking. Authorities in the US are also seeking him for bulk cash smuggling and visa fraud.
The arrest came after negotiations and a 24-hour ultimatum, with the suspects flown to Manila for detention. The arrest was hailed as a “concerted effort” by the police chief, with 2,000 officers involved in the operation. Despite political tensions, the arrest was celebrated by the church’s followers on social media.
