Over 60 women’s and civil society organizations have released a critical report assessing Morocco’s progress in advancing gender equality, particularly in implementing the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action. The report highlights persistent gender disparities in various sectors and emphasizes the need for more effective interventions to address these issues.
The report identifies significant “gender gaps,” especially in rural and marginalized areas, pointing to the lack of progress in enforcing laws promoting gender equality. Despite having the legal framework, women and girls still face systemic barriers limiting their opportunities.
The report calls on Moroccan authorities to prioritize activating the Constitution’s provisions on equality and public consultation, establish the Commission for Equality, and enhance women’s participation in decision-making processes. It advocates for policies addressing gender gaps through education, vocational training, and realizing women’s rights.
Led by the “Free Hands” association, the report emphasizes economic empowerment, social infrastructure improvements, and challenges faced by women in the agricultural sector. It highlights disparities between public and private sector protections and the need for better working conditions, social services, and legislations to protect women’s rights.
The report also discusses women’s underrepresentation in the economy, high rates of NEET youth, violence against women, and inadequate political representation. It concludes by urging intensified efforts to ensure gender equality commitments lead to tangible improvements for women and girls in Morocco.
