Dr. Iziaq Salako, Nigeria’s Minister of State for Environment, emphasized the detrimental impact of vehicular emissions on air quality in the country. This concern was discussed in Abuja during the 2024 International Day of Clean Air for Blue Skies on September 7th.
Salako highlighted that outdated vehicles on Nigerian roads contribute significantly to air pollution, along with industrial activities, gas flaring, and other sources. He stressed the urgency of addressing air quality issues, linking them to global health risks.
Commending President Bola Tinubu’s efforts to promote alternative fuels and electric vehicles for cleaner air, Salako warned of the broad consequences of ignoring this issue on public health, the economy, and the environment.
He reassured that the government would introduce measures like tariffs to deter the importation of old vehicles and encourage local manufacturing. The minister urged collective action to invest in clean air, supporting the global target of reducing air pollutants by 50% by 2030.
