Edmundo Gonzalez, a prominent Venezuelan opposition figure and former presidential candidate, has been granted safe passage out of the country to Spain, where he is expected to receive political asylum. Despite facing multiple criminal accusations in Venezuela, Gonzalez was evacuated by a Spanish Air Force plane on Sunday after seeking refuge in the Spanish embassy.
The decision to allow Gonzalez to leave Venezuela was made in the interest of political peace and tranquility in the country, according to Venezuelan Vice President Delcy Rodriguez. The opposition leader had been in hiding since the controversial presidential election in July, in which President Nicolas Maduro was declared the winner amidst allegations of election fraud.
While the US and several other countries supported Gonzalez as the true winner of the election, others, including China and Russia, recognized Maduro as the legitimate president. The situation has escalated with six Venezuelan opposition figures seeking asylum in the Argentine embassy, prompting a diplomatic rift between the two countries.
As tensions rise, Brazil, representing Argentina’s interests, has been accused of housing asylum seekers planning to harm Maduro. The Brazilian government denies these allegations, emphasizing the diplomatic immunity of the Argentine embassy.
