Israeli Military Officers Warn of Escalation in West Bank
Senior Israeli military officers have accused the country’s political leadership of inciting escalation in the occupied West Bank. Itamar Ben-Gvir and Bezalel Smotrich are blamed for the rise in violence, which could lead to a full-blown uprising as young Palestinians face unemployment and lack of opportunities.
The officers are trying to prevent the population from fully joining the violence, but ongoing Israeli restrictions have exacerbated tensions. Attacks by illegal Israeli settlers on Palestinians further fuel the conflict, with the situation on the verge of a major explosion in the West Bank.
Provocations by government officials risk inflaming tensions, with concerns about intrusions into the Al-Aqsa Mosque and attempts to allow Jewish prayers at the site. The recent Israeli military operation in the northern West Bank, causing significant casualties, has heightened tensions in the area.
The escalation follows a ruling by the International Court of Justice declaring Israel’s occupation unlawful. With over 40,900 Palestinians killed in the Gaza Strip since October and ongoing violence in the West Bank, the situation remains highly volatile.
