Intensified fighting in the Bahri area north of Khartoum has displaced hundreds of families due to clashes between the Sudan Armed Forces (SAF) and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF). The RSF launched sustained attacks on the SAF’s Hattab base, leading to a worsening humanitarian crisis since the war began on April 15, 2023. Witnesses reported artillery fire and military planes flying over the area, with citizens being captured or killed by the RSF.
The United Nations and observers have noted tens of thousands dead and millions displaced, calling for the deployment of an independent force to protect civilians. Both sides have been accused of committing war crimes and crimes against humanity, with over 25 million people facing acute hunger in Sudan, and famine declared in a camp in Darfur.
World Health Organization chief, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, visited Port Sudan as the de facto location of the government, following the fighting that forced authorities out of Khartoum. The situation remains dire, with families fleeing their homes and facing uncertain futures in the midst of ongoing conflict.
