Britain’s National Education Union (NEU) has sparked controversy by submitting a motion to the Trades Union Congress’s annual conference that takes an anti-Israel stance, as reported by the Jewish Chronicle. The motion, which does not mention Hamas or their actions on October 7, condemns Israel as an “apartheid state” and accuses it of “ethnic cleansing.”
In addition, the NEU is calling for delegates to pressure the UK government to recognize Palestinian statehood, end the arms trade with Israel, and impose sanctions on individuals and entities that incite genocide against Palestinians. The union also wants to revoke the 2030 Road Map for UK-Israel bilateral relations and secure a permanent ceasefire, as well as the release of hostages and Palestinian political prisoners.
Critics of the NEU
Russell Langer, Director of Public Affairs at the Jewish Leadership Council, criticized the motion for ignoring Hamas’s atrocities and fueling hate against Israel. Steve Scott, Director of Britain-Israel Trade Union Dialogue, argued that an arms embargo would not bring peace but rather encourage further attacks on Israel. Both emphasized the need for a resolution that leads to peace for both sides.
