In the wake of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, tensions between Moscow and Armenia have been on the rise. The escalation began with Russian “peacekeepers” failing to prevent Azerbaijan’s offensive into Nagorno-Karabakh, resulting in strained relations. Armenia recently took a significant step by removing Russian border guards from its airport after 32 years of their presence, causing irreparable damage in the countries’ ties.
Armenia’s decision to suspend its participation in the Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO) further strained relations with Russia. This move aligns with Armenia’s shift towards strengthening ties with the West, evident in its consideration of EU membership and dialogue for a visa-free regime. Additionally, Armenia ratified the International Criminal Court’s Rome Statute, obliging it to arrest Russian President Putin if he sets foot in the country.
This shift towards the West has caused friction with Russia, but Armenia remains committed to deepening its security ties with countries like France, the U.S., and India. Despite uncertainties, Armenia is looking towards new partnerships and closer integration with Western countries, signaling a significant change in its geopolitical orientation and alliances.
