Treasurer Jim Chalmers has announced the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) will ask Australian citizens aged 16 and over about the topic of sexuality.
After calls from LGBTIQ+ advocates, the government has decided to include questions about sexuality in the 2026 Census, showing a positive step towards inclusivity and representation.
“We have listened to the community. We worked very closely with the Australian Bureau of Statistics. LGBTIQ+ Australians matter. They have been heard and they will count in the 2026 census,” Chalmers told media on Sunday.
The questions will only be asked of Australians aged 16 and over, and the ABS has assured that individuals will have the option not to answer if they choose not to disclose their sexuality.
While the Census will cover questions on sexual identity and gender, the topic of variations of sex characteristics (intersex status) will not be included after testing indicated data accuracy challenges.
Despite initial hesitation from some political parties, the decision to add questions on sexuality in the 2026 Census reflects a growing recognition of the importance of LGBTQ+ representation and equality.
