President Volodymyr Zelenskyy of Ukraine urged U.S. and allied military leaders to grant Ukraine the ability to strike deep within Russia to deter further Russian aggression. Zelenskyy made this plea during a meeting at Ramstein Air Base in Germany, following deadly Russian airstrikes against Ukraine.
The request for long-range strike capabilities comes after Russia targeted Ukrainian military facilities, causing significant casualties. Zelenskyy emphasized the need to make Russian cities and soldiers consider the consequences of their actions. Despite some concerns about escalating the conflict, multiple countries at the meeting expressed support for Ukraine’s request.
Meanwhile, the U.S. announced additional military aid of $250 million for Ukraine, including air defense munitions and artillery. Zelenskyy highlighted the urgency of receiving promised weapons systems and enhancing Ukraine’s defense capabilities before the upcoming U.S. presidential election.
The meeting also focused on bolstering Ukraine’s defense industry and sourcing advanced weaponry. With support from Western allies, Ukraine aims to defend against Russian forces and secure critical infrastructure. The ongoing conflict underscores the need for swift and decisive action to support Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.
