The UN continues its efforts to provide food assistance to at-risk communities in Sudan, specifically in West Darfur. The World Food Programme (WFP) dispatched 100 metric tonnes of food supplies, crossing into Sudan through the Chad-Sudan border. Over 1,500 metric tonnes have been transported since the crossing reopened in August, benefiting nearly 130,000 people. Assistance has already reached Mornei in West Darfur, providing emergency rations and nutritional supplements to thousands.
Despite challenges like flooded roads, the WFP is pushing forward to deliver aid to other vulnerable areas in West Darfur. In South Sudan, $10 million has been allocated to support flood relief efforts, benefiting over 700,000 people affected by the ongoing floods and resulting health issues like malaria and respiratory infections. The funding will provide life-saving assistance to the most impacted areas.
The floods worsen an already difficult humanitarian situation in South Sudan, with a flood preparedness and response plan in place seeking $264 million to aid 2.4 million people. However, the plan has yet to receive funding. The UN remains committed to addressing these urgent needs to ensure the well-being and safety of those affected by crises in Sudan and South Sudan.
