Super Typhoon Yagi Strikes Vietnam After Devastating China

The powerful Typhoon Yagi made landfall in Vietnam after causing destruction in China, leaving two people dead and 92 injured. In Vietnam, the super typhoon brought wind speeds exceeding 149 kph (92 mph), uprooting trees and sweeping ships out to sea.

Before hitting Vietnam, strong winds in the capital Hanoi claimed one life. The storm caused airports to close and power outages in parts of Quang Ninh and Thai Binh provinces.

Previously, Yagi struck Hainan in China with maximum sustained winds of 234 kph (145 mph), causing power outages and displacing over 420,000 residents. Super Typhoon Yagi paralyzed Hainan, disrupting public transport links, and closing the main airport in Haikou.

Impact on Other Areas

In Guangdong province, over 574,000 residents were evacuated before the storm hit, while in Hong Kong, over 270 sought shelter. Yagi led to flight cancellations and evacuations in both regions.

Chinese meteorological authorities downgraded Yagi to a Category 3 typhoon as it moved towards Vietnam. The typhoon’s path could affect Halong Bay, a UNESCO heritage site, and the Gulf of Tonkin.
