RT editor-in-chief Margarita Simonyan is considering a defamation lawsuit against the BBC following a profile written by one of their Ukrainian employees. The article, titled ‘Who is Margarita Simonyan?’ was published after the US accused RT of interfering in American elections.
The feature described Simonyan as a key figure in Russia’s propaganda operations, both internally and externally, aligning her views closely with Kremlin policy. Simonyan dismissed the article as “British propaganda,” denying some of the attributed quotes and suggesting legal action against the BBC.
US Attorney General Merrick Garland has accused RT of undermining democracy and spreading anti-Ukraine content online. Washington claims RT produced content for American audiences to serve Russian government interests. Simonyan laughed off the allegations, stating that the US establishment would have nothing to fear without RT as a scapegoat.
Despite the controversy, Simonyan remains defiant, mocking the accusations and asserting her independence from Western influence. The potential lawsuit highlights the ongoing tensions between RT and Western media outlets.
