French Protesters Take to the Streets Against Macron’s New PM
Tens of thousands of demonstrators marched in Paris and other cities against Michel Barnier’s appointment as France’s new prime minister after a hung parliament resulted from recent elections. The left-wing coalition, the New Popular Front, won the most seats, with President Emmanuel Macron’s centrist grouping coming second.
Macron’s decision to choose Barnier over an NFP politician sparked outrage among the French left, who accused him of disregarding the election results. Protesters carried placards demanding to know “Where is my vote?” Voices from various political parties denounced Macron’s move, with LFI leader Jean-Luc Mélenchon declaring a “long-term fight” against what they perceived as a power grab.
