Workers in Britain have been deprived of holiday pay worth £2bn, with over a million employees missing out on any paid time off, a new study reveals. The TUC’s research shows that workers are entitled to 28 days of paid leave, but 1.1 million workers did not receive a single day of holiday pay, with minority ethnic and low-paid workers disproportionately affected. Roles like waiters, care workers, and catering assistants were among those hit hardest.
The TUC is calling for the creation of a Fair Work Agency to protect workers’ rights, with General Secretary Paul Nowak emphasizing the need for stronger enforcement. With the Labour government and trade unions in alignment, efforts are being made to improve workers’ rights, including banning zero-hours contracts and ending the “fire and rehire” practice.
Despite some political challenges, Labour is pushing ahead with a comprehensive employment rights bill to ensure fair treatment for workers from day one. The programme aims to address key issues like parental leave, sick pay, and protection from unfair dismissal, with union support remaining strong.
