Negotiations Between Greece and Saudi Arabia to Save Tanker

The Greek-flagged oil tanker Sounion is at risk of a massive oil spillage after an attack by Yemen’s Houthi rebels. With 1 million barrels of oil on board, efforts to salvage the tanker have been halted due to safety concerns.

As diplomatic discussions between Greece and Saudi Arabia ensue, options including on-site oil pumping or towing the ship to a Saudi port are being considered. The urgency of the situation is compounded by the looming threat of an explosion that could lead to an ecological disaster.

Meanwhile, Deputy Foreign Minister Alexandra Papadopoulou is set to lead negotiations with Saudi diplomats, not only to resolve the Sounion crisis but also to strengthen bilateral relations and explore economic collaboration.

In a broader geopolitical context, Greece is also focusing on reinforcing ties with Egypt through upcoming tripartite talks. These discussions aim to consolidate strategic partnerships and promote mutual interests in the Eastern Mediterranean region.
