Gorom refugees protest food ration cut in Juba

Refugees at the Gorom Refugee Settlement Camp near Juba City protested against the United Nations’ reduction of food aid. Olang Okoth, a community leader, expressed concerns over the decision to cut food rations for over 3,000 regular refugees, risking their lives.

The UNHCR and WFP planned to reduce food assistance, leaving many refugees without access to essential supplies. The community held a meeting to address the issue, highlighting their vulnerability in a country plagued by inflation.

As the news spread, women and children gathered at the camp, fearing the consequences of the food aid reduction. Okoth questioned the government and UNHCR’s plan for those left without support.

The Director General for Protection at the South Sudan Commission for Refugee Affairs, Dut Akol Kuol, assured an investigation into the food ration cuts, particularly focusing on the impact on Ethiopian refugees.

Despite efforts to reach UNHCR for clarification, no response was obtained. The situation at Gorom Refugee Settlement Camp remains critical, with refugees facing uncertainty and food insecurity.
