Italy’s culture minister, Gennaro Sangiuliano, resigned amid a scandal involving an affair with a ministry consultant, Maria Rosaria Boccia, that caused embarrassment to Premier Giorgia Meloni’s government. Despite Meloni initially standing by Sangiuliano, she eventually accepted his resignation, describing him as “an honest man.”
The scandal raised concerns about Boccia potentially accessing sensitive government documents related to an upcoming G7 culture ministers meeting. Sangiuliano initially denied Boccia’s consultant appointment, but she provided evidence to the contrary on social media.
In his resignation, Sangiuliano apologized to his wife and Meloni for the embarrassment caused by the affair. His tenure as culture minister was marked by initiatives such as appointing new directors at Italian museums and implementing a new entrance fee at the Pantheon.
In recognition of his work, Meloni thanked Sangiuliano for his contributions to Italian cultural heritage. Alesandro Giuli was sworn in as the new culture minister, succeeding Sangiuliano.
Despite the controversy, Sangiuliano’s resignation allowed for a new chapter in Italy’s cultural leadership under Giuli.
