Algerians are preparing to cast their votes in an upcoming presidential election, but analysts are not expecting any major changes in the leadership. Out of the 15 candidates vying for the position, only two have managed to gather the required support to challenge the incumbent, Abdelmadjid Tebboune. The candidates Abdelaali Hassani Cherif and Youcef Aouchiche are unlikely to pose a significant threat to Tebboune’s position, as their proposals align closely with the existing government policies.
Under Tebboune’s presidency, Algeria has seen some improvements, particularly in the economy. The resurgence of energy prices has boosted the country’s exports, preventing the need to reduce subsidies for essential services. Despite the apparent certainty of Tebboune’s victory, there are still risks involved, as the opposition may try to undermine his mandate.
The upcoming election also brings concerns about potential human rights abuses, as the government aims to prevent another wave of protests like the 2019 Hirak movement. The imprisonment of dissenting voices has raised international criticism, with many individuals still in jail for their participation in the protests. Despite these challenges, Algeria continues to navigate its political landscape as it heads towards the election.
