Today in Garavice near Bihać, the 83rd anniversary of the heinous crimes committed against Serbs, Jews, and Roma will be commemorated. Over 12,000 civilians, primarily Serbs, were brutally killed during the summer of 1941 at this site.
The Committee of the Government of the Republika Srpska, dedicated to preserving the traditions of liberation wars, organized a memorial service with wreath-laying to honor the victims. A history lesson will also be conducted to emphasize the importance of remembering this tragic event and the innocent lives lost.
In 1941, at the onset of World War II, the Ustashas carried out a massacre, killing 12,000 Serbian civilians in Garavice, making it one of the largest killing fields for Serbs in the Independent State of Croatia (NDH), with many children among the victims.
According to intelligence reports, the total number of people killed in the broader Bihać area was estimated to be between 14,000 and 14,500.
