Boosting Recycling Rates through the Deposit Return Scheme
Recent data from Re-turn reveals that a quarter of drinks containers sold aren’t being recycled via the Deposit Return Scheme, leaving millions of euros unclaimed each month. However, in August alone, 111 million containers were returned, putting €20m back in consumers’ pockets. Since the scheme’s full implementation on 31 May, a total of 458 million containers have been returned, with €79.7m refunded to customers.
Despite a slowdown in the rate of increase, the scheme is still making progress, with industry experts like Vincent Jennings of the CSNA optimistic about its future impact. Comparing Ireland’s transition to countries like Denmark, which boasts a 92% return rate, Jennings believes it may take a few years to reach similar levels.
To further enhance the scheme’s reach, Jennings calls on the government to extend financial incentives in the upcoming Budget, allowing more retailers to participate in the initiative.
Monthly Container Returns:
- February – 2 million
- March – 20 million
- April – 51 million
- May – 78 million
- June – 90 million
- July – 102 million
- August – 111 million
