US seizes 30+ websites in Russian disinfo plot

Breaking News: The US Justice Department seizes over 30 website domains linked to Russian disinformation campaign “Doppelganger.” The campaign, initiated during the Ukraine War, resurfaced during the Israel-Hamas conflict, involving cloning reputable news sites to spread fake news.

Attorney-General Merrick B. Garland stated, “The Justice Department is seizing 32 internet domains used by the Russian government to interfere in our country’s elections.” The Treasury Department also announced sanctions on individuals and entities associated with the campaign.

Russian Involvement

First Deputy Chief of Staff Sergei Vladilenovich Kiriyenko is accused of covertly spreading Russian propaganda through these domains. Despite its origins, Doppelganger’s impact during the Israel-Hamas War has been significant.

In November 2023, Haaretz identified fake content and squatted domains linked to the conflict. The Russian government’s actions to divide the West, especially during the Israel-Hamas War, have raised concerns. Stay informed with the latest developments!
