US Secretary of State Blinken traveled to Haiti to support efforts in combating gang violence, meeting with interim Prime Minister Conille and announcing increased humanitarian aid.
Gang control has spread in Haiti since the assassination of President Moise, leading to a state of emergency across the country. The violence has displaced hundreds of thousands and caused thousands of casualties.
In response, Kenya sent 400 police officers to aid law enforcement in Haiti, but Blinken suggested a UN peacekeeping force may be necessary. However, Haiti has a history of resisting foreign intervention due to past negative experiences.
The Multinational Security Support Mission, supported by the US, is seeking a UN extension to continue its work. Blinken emphasized the importance of stable governance and upcoming elections in rebuilding Haiti’s democratic system.
As Haiti continues its journey towards stability, the international community remains committed to supporting its recovery efforts.
