The Nigeria Police Force (NPF) has clarified that President Bola Tinubu did not approve a tenure extension for Inspector General of Police (IG), Kayode Egbetokun. Despite reaching the mandatory retirement age of 60 on September 4, Egbetokun’s continued tenure was in accordance with the law governing the IG’s office as stipulated by the President.
Speculations arose due to a letter from the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume, but Police Force Spokesman, Muyiwa Adejobi, confirmed that the IG’s appointment letter granted a four-year tenure from the date of appointment, not an extension. Adejobi emphasized that the IG’s tenure is in full compliance with the law and not open to debate or distraction.
Addressing the misinformation circulating, Adejobi urged the public to disregard unfounded reports and trust that the IG’s tenure is in accordance with the law. The Police Act, 2020, supersedes any earlier appointments, ensuring the integrity of the policing system in Nigeria.
