Conservative Michel Barnier vows to uphold Macron’s policies while navigating a divided parliament

Newly appointed French Prime Minister Michel Barnier has pledged to defend President Emmanuel Macron’s policies and take a tougher stance on immigration in a bid to unite a fragmented parliament. With a government lacking a majority in the lower house, Barnier aims to include members from various political backgrounds, including conservatives and Macron loyalists.

A veteran conservative and former EU Brexit negotiator, Barnier faces the challenge of pushing through reforms and the 2025 budget amidst pressure to reduce the deficit. While expressing willingness to uphold some of Macron’s unpopular reform policies, Barnier also aims to protect vulnerable groups and enhance border controls to stem uncontrolled migration flows.

Even though political rivals expressed concerns about the influence of the far-right National Rally party on Macron’s decisions, Barnier assures a balanced approach that respects all ideologies. As he takes on the role with cautious support from the far right, Barnier remains determined to lead France towards stability and necessary reforms.
