Imagine having $25,000 at your disposal. Most Australians would consider buying a new car, putting a deposit on a home, or planning a luxurious vacation. But for Melbourne local Mary Lansell, it’s a different story – she’s giving it all away.
At 73, Lansell is part of a growing number of older Australians choosing to leave charitable gifts in their wills. She intends to leave her donation to the Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre, a place that provided her with essential care during her battle with lymphoma.
Despite only 25% of Baby Boomers considering leaving gifts in their will, Lansell aims to change that narrative. With a rise in philanthropic giving expected, including charitable gifts in wills could play a significant role in achieving that goal.
Lansell’s generosity doesn’t stop there. She volunteers at the cancer center and encourages her family to donate to the cause in her name. Her $25,000 bequest is just one way she hopes to inspire others to give back.
“Until I leave this planet, I will be an ambassador for it,” she said, demonstrating her commitment to making a difference.
