Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has unveiled a $4.7 billion funding plan to combat domestic and gendered violence over the next five years. The plan, announced following a meeting of the national cabinet, will focus on supporting frontline services, preventing violence escalation, better supporting young victims, and addressing the impact of alcohol on violence.
The plan will kick off on July 1 next year, with $3.9 billion in federal funding and the remaining from states and territories. $800 million will be allocated to increase financial support for legal services. Albanese stressed the need for a coordinated national approach to address the crisis, emphasizing the importance of societal change alongside legislative and financial interventions.
NSW Premier Chris Minns echoed the sentiment, highlighting the necessity for a cultural shift to accompany the substantial financial injection. “Change needs to happen at every level of government and society to ensure the safety of women,” he stated.
