Germany Considers Sending Migrants to Rwanda

A German official has suggested a controversial migration policy of deporting migrants to Rwanda, taking inspiration from a failed British scheme. Joachim Stamp, Berlin’s migration representative, proposed outsourcing deportation procedures for migrants arriving via Russia and Belarus to Rwanda, utilizing capacities originally intended for a UK agreement. This move aims to thwart alleged efforts by Russia and Belarus to destabilize the EU by smuggling in migrants.

The Rwanda model, according to Stamp, would prevent propaganda from luring Iraqis, Syrians, and Afghans to Europe. The British plan involved sending illegal migrants to Rwanda for asylum processing, with successful applicants still residing there, funded by the UK. Stamp labeled the migrant flow from Russia and Belarus as part of “hybrid warfare” orchestrated by Putin and Lukashenko.

Opposition parties in Germany have advocated for outsourcing asylum procedures, and Chancellor Olaf Scholz has pledged a review by December. The debate over migration policies continues amidst concerns of external manipulation and the need for effective solutions.
