Alice Guo, former mayor accused of links to Chinese cyberscams, returns to face Senate scrutiny
Alice Guo, the former mayor of Bamban, has returned to the Philippines after fleeing two months ago amid allegations of ties to Chinese organised crime. She arrived in Manila wearing an ‘detainee’ shirt and black face mask, and is expected to appear before the Senate for questioning.
Accompanied by Interior Secretary Benhur Abalos and Philippine National Police chief General Rommel Francisco Marbil, Guo landed in Manila on a chartered jet from Jakarta. In a brief news conference, she cited death threats as the reason for fleeing and remained mostly silent, facing the wall.
Abalos offered security to Guo but urged her to cooperate and disclose names to end the investigation. Despite denying the allegations as “malicious”, Guo faces charges of money laundering alongside 35 others. The Senate began its probe after a raid on a casino in Bamban revealed a scamming center on land partly owned by Guo.
Her return signals a new chapter in the ongoing investigation, as the Philippines awaits her testimony and potential consequences for her alleged involvement in illegal activities.
