Finnish private medical reimbursement increase has minimal impact.

The Finnish government, led by Prime Minister Petteri Orpo, has significantly increased reimbursements for private medical practices in an effort to reduce waiting times in the public sector. Despite spending 31 million euros to raise reimbursements to 50.5 million euros, the number of appointments at private practices only increased slightly.

Experts like Mika Kortelainen and Petri Böckerman have criticized the government’s approach, stating that the increase in reimbursements has not had the desired impact. Data shows that the use of private medical services remains limited, mainly due to high costs and lack of awareness.

Although the government plans to further increase reimbursements to 50 euros per appointment, experts believe this may not lead to a significant increase in private appointments. The Finnish Medical Association also opposes the raise, fearing it will benefit high-income earners more.

If the skepticism proves correct, taxpayer money will be covering costs for those who would use private services regardless of reimbursement. The government’s efforts to boost private sector usage may need reevaluation based on current trends and expert opinions.
