Ex-Juba mayor Kalisto freed from custody

A former mayor of Juba City Council and influential politician in Central Equatoria State, Kalisto Ladu, was released from detention on Friday after being picked up by National Security operatives in a case that has caused public outcry.

Ladu was taken from his home in Juba on 30 March in front of his wife and family members and has been held incommunicado in detention since then. His lawyer confirmed his release, but did not provide further details.

Last month, Vice President Dr. James Wani Igga disclosed that Ladu was facing criminal charges, some of which carried the death penalty. Ladu had been an outspoken advocate against land grabbing in Juba.

Despite the constitutional requirement to bring detainees before a judge within 24 hours, this rarely happens in South Sudan. Ladu’s case highlights the challenges facing the country’s legal system and the treatment of political figures.
