China’s Decision to End Foreign Adoptions Leaves Many Families in Limbo
China recently made the surprising announcement that it is no longer allowing foreign adoptions, except in cases where blood relatives want to adopt a child or a stepchild. This decision marks the end of the country’s intercountry adoption programme, which had facilitated adoptions of Chinese-born children by families overseas.
The reasoning behind China’s decision was not fully explained, but the move aligns with the spirit of relevant international conventions. This decision has left hundreds of families in limbo, with pending adoptions now uncertain.
While many foreigners have adopted children from China over the years, the US has seen the largest number of adoptions, with 82,674 Chinese children finding homes in the country. However, in recent years, the number of adoptions has significantly decreased.
China’s suspension of international adoptions during the COVID-19 pandemic further complicated the situation. The government resumed adoptions for children with travel authorisation from before the suspension but has now put a halt on all other cases.
It remains to be seen how this decision will impact families looking to adopt from China in the future, as other countries also grapple with challenges in international adoption processes.
